Ever since I joined the Dandelion team in 2016, it has been my personal mission to grow our platform for girls’ visions, voices and creativity. At Dandelion, we love to see girls have fun, be silly and laugh with each other! But we also take girls seriously – very seriously.
Last night, over 160 people convened for an online screening of the Unapologetic Beauty documentary, which was created by Dandelion’s Performance Company in 2015. Since then, our young women leaders have taken this documentary and the accompanying toolkit into schools and community organizations across Ottawa. Over the years, they have supported hundreds of girls of all ages, sizes, shapes and backgrounds to embark on their own journey of discovery and self-love.
Our world would be a much better place if we took the time to listen, reflect and act on the words of those that have traditionally held the least power in our society. So, today, I am using my platform to share some of what our Performance Company members had to say about the value of providing safe spaces that allow girls to experience joy in being exactly who they are at any given moment.
If these amazing young women have inspired you to action, but you aren’t sure what to do, let me offer up a suggestion: check out the Unapologetic Beauty documentary and toolkit on our website. Share the documentary with your daughter, granddaughter, niece or any young woman in your life that you care about (note: the documentary is best for girls ages 11 and up). Listen to what she has to say. Assure her that it’s normal to feel insecure sometimes, and tell her she is amazing exactly as she is. And if you are wondering how she can get involved with Dandelion, just reach out. We’re ready to welcome her with open arms!
